Michael Koch is the well-known author of THE SHAY LOCOMOTIVE, TITAN OF THE TIMBER, published in 1971 by The World Press, Incorporated, of Denver, Colorado. His present book recounts the fascinating and colorful history of a century and a half of logging railroads in the area that stretches from the Kennebec River in Maine to Puget Sound on the west coast and from the Gulf of Mexico to Alaska and Canada. Here in one oversize, profusely illustrated volume is the whole panoramic sweep of the heritors of Paul Bunyan, who came, who saw, and who conquered the vast forests of the North American Continent.
Meticulously researched and lavishly illustrated in full color and black and white, this book presents the full panoply of the extractive industry that made the development of North America possible and literally ensured that continent's greatness.
Big and sprawling, as befits its subject, the book contains 560 pages, 925 black and white photographic reproductions (most being published for the first time ), 12 full-color paintings (including the dust jacket painting), and 22 line drawings. The paintings, line drawings and photographs all graphically portray the logging industry in bygone years.
STEAM & THUNDER IN THE TIMBER is a glorious testament to a now-vanished era when men of mighty mettle fought and tamed the prodigious forests on their own terms. Most of all, this is a book of literary and artistic quality that will give the reader many hours of enjoyment, now and in years to come. It is a treasure house of historical photographs and an excellent addition to your permanent library; one that you will open again and again just for the sheer pleasure of looking through it.
Part I has chapters that cover the early logging industry prior to the advent of the steam engine as the workhorse of the forest; the ingenuity of the timbermen in overcoming problems and obstacles; and the ending of the era of steam.
In Part II chapters deal with the railroads of the logging industry in New England and Eastern Canada; the Middle Atlantic States; the Lake States and Ontario; the Central States; the South; the Rocky Mountains; the Pacific Coast States and Nevada; and Western Canada and Alaska.
The book also contains an excellent bibliography listing the hundreds of books, pamphlets, catalogs, magazines and other articles which provided source material for Mr. Koch. A large index makes the book easy to use as a reference work.
All of the geared locomotive builders are represented photographically; Shay, Climax, Heisler, Willamette, Baldwin and Dunkirk. In addition there are photos of a tremendous variety of the rod engines, from dinky little saddle tankers to gigantic articulateds, used by the logging industry. Also included are photos of many homemade steam contraptions built by the lumbermen themselves.
STEAM & THUNDER IN THE TIMBER is a tremendous contribution to the history of the steam engine's involvement with the logging industry. It is entertainingly written and beautifully illustrated-a slice of Americana that bears the indubitable hallmark of permanence.
The 12 beautifully delineated paintings and 22 superlative line drawings which so enhance this volume are the work of the renowned and talented railroad artist, Richard Ward, whose illustrations are so well known among the rail-fans of the United States.
