INTRODUCTION
This series depicts the history of the San Joaquin Division, between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. The story intertwined with photographs in a chronological and geographical sequence following the route of Southern Pacific's Train No. 51, the San Joaquin and later the San Joaquin Daylight, also included are several other named Trains including , the Tehachapi (Trains 55-56). the Owl (Trains 57-58), the West Coast (Trains 59-60) as well as several First, Second and Third class freights. Between Los Angeles' Taylor Yard and Burbank Junction a few freights from the Coast Division are also shown. You will also see a few trains from the Santa Fe Railway, between Mojave and Kern Junction, in Bakersfield, where Santa Fe has trackage rights. The photographs included range in dates from the early 1930s to the mid 1950s. Around Bakersfield, there are photos on several of the SP branches. Farther up the valley are more photographs along SP branches. This first volume covers Los Angeles westward to Woodford, near the town of Keene west of the Tehachapi Loop.
