For over 140 years the steam locomotive was part of normal life, serving industry and people. Whatever its drawbacks, when it came to an end in everyday BR service it was like the passing of a friend. Indeed in a span of only thirteen years from 1955 to 1968 the destruction of the steam locomotive was so ruthlessly pursued that from being the prime means of rail traction it virtually passed into oblivion. These were the depressing years when favourite classes disappeared or languished rusting awaiting the cutter's torch. But for some there was to be new life, restored and preserved for use on the new privately-run tourist steam railways or, after BR realised the commercial value of nostalgia, on occasional steam-hauled excursions on selected scenic BR routes.
Tom Heavyside describes and illustrates in text and top class photographs steam locomotives in their last years on regular BR steam duties, the years of misery as classes were withdrawn for scrap, and the years of revival in steam operation as a major tourist revenue earner. He looks not only at BR types but also the multitude of engines including narrow gauge used on industrial lines. This volume thus forms a unique record of the declining years of steam and the great rescue and revival that hopefully will keep steam alive for future generations who will be able to see at first hand one of man's greatest inventions that played no small part in shaping the world we live in today.
