DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
In this second volume of STEAM LOCOMOTIVES OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN RAILROADS D. F. Holland discusses the South African Railroad steam locomotives that were used between 1910 and 1955, as well as the Harbour Board locomotives that were in use between 1873 and 1904.
The author, who actually worked on many of the locomotives that are described in this book, provides a vivid picture of the mighty South African Railroad system in the first half of this century. The many actual photographs and drawings further enhance Mr. Holland's excellent text.
A detailed appendix lists complete data concerning SAR Reclassification of Locomotives, making this two volume set the definitive work on the locomotives of South Africa's railroads.
INTRODUCTION
IN compiling the history of the steam locomotives of the South African Railways so much information was collected that it was impossible to contain it all in one volume and still keep costs at a reasonable level. To overcome this, it was decided to publish the work in two volumes, and this book, the second volume, covers all the locomotives introduced after 1910. In order that the record may be as complete as possible, it also includes the little harbour-board locomotives which were placed in service by the various harbour boards around the coast, at Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban, between 1873 and 1904.
This section of the manuscript was far easier to compile than the contents of the first volume as I actually worked on many of the locomotives described during the twenty-two years I was employed by the SAR, chiefly at Salt River works at Cape Town. The records were more easily obtainable, and five years in the drawing-office also helped. I saw the introduction of the standard boilers, and watched many new types of locomotives being erected. Many of these have now gone, but I have my memories of them as they first steamed out of the shops.
I count myself fortunate indeed to have been able to see many of the locomotives which others know only from photographs, all the Mallets; the Garratts with the exception of the class GA; the Kitson-Meyer; all the tender locomotives from class 1 onwards, and all the tanks. I took my first locomotive photograph way back in 1922, a class 16C, No 831, at Braamfontein, so that this work is really the culmination of a life-long study of the SAR locomotives. I only hope that it will give as much pleasure to the reader as I have found in writing it.
