Index
This book, written by the man who was personally concerned with the design of many great locomotives, is the first to give the engineering history of the American steam locomotive throughout the period of its greatest evolution. Mr. Bruce's work is truly definitive, being based on his forty-five years of experience in locomotive building. He was assistant vice-president in charge of engineering, and director of steam locomotive engineering, in the American Locomotive Company.
After a short review of the state of the railroads, the author gives a brief survey of the steam locomotive during the nineteenth century and a resume of the locomotive-building industry at the turn of the century. He then devotes sections of the book to the development during the first half of the twentieth century of the locomotive generally, of power transmission, and of the basic elements such as the boiler, firebox, side and main rods, frames, mechanical stoker, superheater, automatic air brakes, etc. Of particular importance are the sections devoted to the progressive development of the numerous types of both main-line and special-service locomotives. These are fully described and explained. Each type is illustrated.
Final sections of the book are devoted to a graphic description of the growth and development of the locomotive in size, weight, and horsepower output during the twentieth century; the competitors of the steam locomotive; and the future design of the steam locomotive.
While the technical expert, in particular, will find this book of absorbing interest, its content is such that the layman and railroad aficionado also will delight in it. The book is fully illustrated with many line drawings and charts and 179 halftones.
