The Steam Locomotive Directory of North America is an inventory of all steam locomotives still in existence on our continent. Each locomotive has its own listing, over 1,875 in all, ranging from tiny saddletankers to the largest locomotives ever constructed. Listed are not only those in museums and parks, but those in private collections and those still tucked away in scrap yards and forgotten mills as well.
This book is the result of hundreds of letters, hundreds of hours of telephone conversations, thousands of miles of driving to do first-hand research, and thousands of hours of research in hundreds of books and periodicals. For the first time all the facts on the surviving steam locomotives of North America are collected in one place. Data on each locomotive include: builder, builder's number, date built, wheel arrangement, cylinder size, boiler pressure, driving wheel diameter, tractive effort, loaded weight of locomotive, loaded weight on drivers, fuel, gauge of track operated on; ownership history including original owner, subsequent owner with dates of sale, road numbers, re-numberings, locations operated at (on short line and industrial engines), and the current status and location of each locomotive. This book will be found to be an invaluable reference source for railroad and locomotive enthusiasts, model railroaders, and historians. It is indexed by builder, wheel arrangement and owner in addition to being arranged by location, to enable the reader to find and identify all surviving steam locomotives in North America. The book is profusely illustrated with over 200 photographs of surviving locomotives at various stages of their careers.
