Inside Dust Jacket
It is 20 years since the original edition of Steam into Wessex was published, and a generation has grown up since then that did not experience the working of steam on the Southern Region's South Western main line to Bournemouth and Weymouth.
Mike Esau's association with this line goes back to childhood, as he was brought up at New Malden within earshot of the line around which his earliest memories remain, and along side this he was to spend many happy hours photographing the ever-changing moods, motive power and life along the track.
The 1950s and 1960s were an exciting and inspiring period for railway photography as the railways were gradually modernised and the steam engine declined in importance, although much contemporary railway photography was centred around the 'set-piece' three-quarter front views lit by full sun. Whilst the author admits to taking such images, he also endeavoured to be more artistic. In his view the railway must be in harmony with the landscape through which it operated and pleasing to the eye. The reader will see that this has been applied to virtually every image in Steam into Wessex. This new edition also takes the opportunity to include a number of illustrations not included in the original and to enhance the information provided in the captions.
For those unfortunate not to witness the sight of the country's last steam-worked main line, Steam into Wessex will evoke the reader's feeling of what might have been.
