By the dawn of celestial flight, the steam locomotive had truly become the dinosaur of our age, its deafening rumble and shrill whistle to be heard only in the byways of the land. Diesel-electric power was everywhere, with but a handful of lines still dispatching tonnage behind the faithful iron horse of yesteryear. Soon even these had changed over, so that except for a few locomotives on short-line, industrial or switching service, there was no steam power above Mexico anywhere on the North American continent.
STEAM IN THE SIXTIES contains the work of a number of photographers, several of whom have traveled over 100,000 miles searching the debris of dieselization for the last vapors of steam. Stunningly pictured here-with an accompanying text by the authors of STEEL RAILS TO THE SUNRISE-are the magnificent results of their quests which ranged from Canada to Mexico, and from Cape Cod to California. Explicitly told and beautifully photographed, this book is a haunting epitaph to the steam locomotive.
