Descriptions of the coloured illustrations
It costs a lot of money and involves quite a journey to find the splendour of steam in the landscape today. Mainline steam has not existed in the British Isles since 1968 and it will soon pass from the countryside of Western Europe. This book, however, captures the evocative sights and nostalgic glories of steam as a feature of the landscape. In 96 pages of colour photographs, full justice is done to the majesty of the steam locomotive. The pictures show railways in all parts of the world as well as dwelling lovingly on the last days of steam in the British landscape; they record, too, some of the sad sights of neglect that an administration which had lost interest allowed to be seen on the tracks of Britain.
The author's text pinpoints the highlights of the last steam in action and exposes the factors which led to the untimely withdrawal of this form of traction from the place of its birth. In these pages we range from the Welsh Marches to the East Coast of Scotland, from the great Lickey Incline to the gentle hills of Surrey, from the High Andes of Chile to the great Hungarian Plain and from the Paris suburbs to the green highlands of Kenya; in each arresting picture Tony Hudson's camera has recorded the passing of something once regarded by everyone as a part of their lives.
Kenneth Westcott Jones is a noted Travel Correspondent and the author of fifteen books, several of them on railway themes. He has travelled over two million miles by rail in 90 countries. His love for steam engines and his belief in steam traction are known throughout the world and his enthusiasm will strike a chord in all those who remember with gratitude the sight of plumes of steam in the landscape.
