Many veteran pre-grouping locomotives were still active, especially in the early 1950s when examples of ex-Great Northern designs were to be found among the official allocations of both locomotive depots.

The Cathedral City of Peterborough had lines coming in from all directions; several of these were unfortunately closed during the period. From the London Midland Region lines came in from Leicester, Rugby and Northampton, the last two routes giving connections to and from the West Coast Main Line to Scotland. From the east lines ran in from Norwich and Cambridge via Ely and March (where the famous Whitemoor marshalling yards were extremely busy) and from the North Norfolk coast the M&GN line provided a service via King's Lynn and Wisbech. Another line which carried important traffic was that to Spalding and Grimsby. However, the most important line was the East Coast Main Line from King's Cross to Edinburgh which provided a fast direct link from Peterborough to many important northern cities and towns and a non-stop service direct to London King's Cross.

It would be impossible to go into detail on all the locomotive types to be found in the area in this brief introduction and I therefore propose to list only the main types to be seen to add interest and detail to the photographic selection. Mention has already been made, albeit briefly, of the ex-Great Northern designs still active in the Peterborough area in the 1950s. Without doubt, pride of place - in my own mind at least - must go to the ex-GNR 4-4-2 tanks, which were at the time responsible for station pilot duties as well as working on several of the branch lines for which the local depots provided motive power. These veterans will long be remembered for their characteristic sounds including their sharp exhaust bark as, for example, they banked a heavy northbound express out of North station. Unfortunately all were withdrawn before the preservation movement really got under way. Other designs performing useful services were the J52 0-6-0 saddle tanks, responsible for shunting in the many local yards, while other 0-6-0 locomotives included a few early J3 and J4 engines which were by this time confined to light duties. The J6 type, however, was extremely common on many duties.

Of the Eastern Region locomotives other than those already mentioned, examples of all the pacific types were to be seen at Peterborough, including the A2 rebuilds and the later Thompson and Peppercorn designs. The considerable freight traffic was in the hands of WDs with LNER design 2-8-0s and the veteran ex-Great Central 04s still to be found. Shortly after their introduction, the 9F 2-10-0s rapidly became part of the scene, mainly on heavy coal traffic. During the 1950s other unusual locos included solitary ex-Great Central L3 2-6-4T 69064, allocated for coal traffic to Little Barford Power Station. It was shortlived on this duty due to braking problems. Another interesting engine working through on most days was the unique streamlined W1 4-6-4 60700. Locomotive types from the London Midland Region included the 2P 4-4-0s through the various 0-6-0s of class 3F and 4F plus the occasional Beyer Garretts and compounds, all in addition to the LMR stalwarts of class 5 and 8F which were very much in the picture.

New England depot (35A) was one of the largest depots in the Eastern Region, having an allocation of 168 locomotives in 1954, while Spital Bridge (35C) had a further 46.
