The great copper, gold and silver mining boom that struck the Boundary District of southern British Columbia and northern Washington State brought a rush to this mountainous region that few travellers of today would imagine. Mines and huge smelters dominated the lives of thousands of people in newly built cities that became famous for their mining wealth. Grand Forks, Greenwood, Phoenix, and Republic boomed with the coming of the rival Canadian Pacific and Great Northern railways. By the early 1900s one of the largest and most productive copper mining and smelting centres in the world was in full operation.
Steam Along the Boundary brings this story to life the dramatic and compelling story of the competing railways that were central to the mining boom. The story extends eastward to Spokane and westward to the Okanagan, Similkameen and through the Fraser Valley as railway expansion linked the mining towns to the competing commercial centres of the Inland Empire and Vancouver.
