THE steam locomotive, created in this country in the early years of the 19th century, is regarded with particular affection by the British people, and although the 'iron horse' was retired from British Railways service in August 1968, this book illustrates that it is still very much alive today.
Using high quality photographs of preserved historic locomotives, Steam All The Way traces the development of express passenger types and classes from the middle of the 19th century to the end of steam construction in the BR era. Briefly examined also are the important roles played by locomotives built for goods, mixed traffic and shunting duties. The text is illustrated primarily by colour photographs, produced in the 1980s by some of Britain's finest railway photographers, depicting a wide range of locomotives from prestige passenger locomotives to small shunting engines.
Throughout the year, standard gauge steam locomotives provide an important part of the leisure industry, pulling trains of holidaymakers at the many private railways and steam centres scattered around the country. Many of these railways are operated chiefly by volunteers, who work to ensure that the steam locomotive lives on to delight future generations. In Museums too, such as the magnificent National Railway Museum, at York, can be seen gleaming examples of a proud railway tradition. Steam All The Way is a celebration of the standard gauge steam locomotives which may still be seen today.
