Freight locomotives, whose activities were responsible for producing well over half the total railway revenue, have been largely overshadowed over the years by the glamour of famous express passenger engines. Only towards the end of stream traction on BR were their valuable services more fully appreciated.
The Stanier 8F 2-8-0s of the LMS may fairly claim to have been the most advanced freight locomotives produced before nationalization. Powerful, versatile and reliable, they were used extensively both on and off their parent system at home and also in several countries abroad. In 1968 surviving 8Fs accounted for over half of the remaining engines, while some, sold to Turkey in 1940, were still in service there in 1976. This volume prepared by the Stanier 8F Locomotive Society, is offered as a tribute to these fine locomotives.
