United States Railroad Administration, or USRA, locomotives not only helped to alleviate the nation's wartime needs for motive power but also served as a basic design standard for a large number of locomotives built well into the 1920s. Over 5,100 locomotives were built to USRA designs, and 1,856 of them were purchased by the Railroad Administration.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eWhile this standardization was ordered by the Government, the job of preparing the designs, drawings, and specifications was accomplished by a committee of eleven railroad officials working with the three major locomotive builders-Alco, Baldwin, and Lima. They created twelve standard designs, encompassing both \"light\" locomotives of 55,000 pounds loading on the driving axles, and \"heavy\" locomotives of 60,000 pounds loading. Locomotive classes with both light and heavy types were the Mikado (2-8-2), the Santa Fe (2-10-2), the Pacific (4-6-2), and the Mountain (4-8-2). Switchers (0-6-0 and 0-8-0) were of the light type, while the Mallets (2-6-6-2 and 2-8-8-2) were of the heavy type.
