ON THE BACK COVER
If it is out of sight it is often out of mind. Most St. Louisans turn on their water several times a day without thinking about the infrastructure, people and operations which give them very inexpensive, crystal clear water, some of the best on earth. For many years an important part of bringing that water into people's homes and businesses was the St. Louis Water Works Railway.
In 2004 one of the principal trolley cars which provided service on that electric railway celebrates its 90th birthday. The car is still thrilling crowds of people at the Museum of Transportation near Kirkwood, where a dedicated group of people maintain and operate it on the Museum's Demonstration Streetcar Line.
This book is a celebration of car number 10 as it turns ninety, and also of the railway which ran it. It is not a book of rosters, builder's dates, and contract numbers. Rather, you will find a lively history which puts you on the front platform, controller in hand, flying down the tracks of time, visiting with the people who were passionate about the trolley because it was such a big part of their lives.
Enjoy!
