Maplewood, Wellston and University City centered on streetcar loops while Bridgeton, Clayton, Ferguson, Kirkwood, St. Charles and Webster Groves all had streetcar service in the 1940s, and some into the 1950s and the 1960s. This was largely a byproduct of road-widening projects, such as those on Vandeventer, Market, Natural Bridge and the outer limits of the St. Charles Rock Road. This was a program to reorganize and simplify transit routes in specific neighborhoods. Other car lines were amalgamated and better integrated with bus lines and the most heavily-traveled were upgraded with 200 new streetcars, accompanied by a fleet of similarly-styled buses.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eEight more car lines were to be converted in 1942. The replacement buses were delivered, but an order from the new wartime Office of Defense Transportation early that year (1942) put closures on hold, and for the rest of the 1940s, public transit was stretched to the limit.
