This book was intended to be a continuation of my pictorial series started in 1986. After accumulating more information than would have been needed for that type of project, I decided to do a more in-depth study of the passenger equipment.
Are there any mysteries left to be solved with regard to passenger equipment used on the Sandy River? Probably not. Does that mean more questions won't be raised ? No. There will always be questions; hopefull some of your's will be answered. Perhaps something in this book will trigger new questions, and with luck, future historians will put those concerns to rest as well.
To start the search, we have to go back to the 1870s and probe George Mansfield's mind as to why he chose th Ranlet Car Company to build the first two-foot gauge equipment in the United States. Originally built for service in Massachusetts, the year or so that it lasted there had little impact on how this story ends.
What is intriguing about this story is that there were no less than seven different entities that supplied the Franklin County roads with passenger equipment. Yes, several of these were reorganizations of existing firms but no matter, different names they were. The first is understandable, the Ranlet Car Company of Laconia, Ne Hampshire. They were close to the Billerica & Bedford and would more than likely have been willing to lister to what Mr. Mansfield was proposing.
In any case, they built two passenger cars for the B&B. In all respects, these were the smallest of any cars that ran in Franklin County; all cars after that would be about 10 feet longer and several inches higher and wider than the original two cars.
