Spokanes Street Railways an Illustrated History By Mutschler Parent & Siegert Dust Jacket 1987  208 Pages
This volume actually consists of three books in one. These are separate studies of the electric railway industry in eastern Washington from three different points of view: a history of the rise and decline of an urban street railway network; the personal reminiscences of a former Spokane United Railways employee; and a history of the Washington Water Power interurban lines. These three studies complement each other. Rosters of equipment, and scale drawings for the benefit of the model building fraternity round out this volume.
This project had its beginnings when Clyde Parent and Wilmer Siegert were young men with an interest in the street cars and interurbans that served their community. Clyde pursued his interest so actively that he went to work for the SUR during the last decade of trolley operations. Today Clyde paints views of the electric railways which served Spokane, including the fronticepiece for this book. Clyde began writing about his experiences as a motorman for the Inland Empire Railway Historical Society's publications and found an enthusiastic audience.
Wilmer Siegert rode the WWP interurban from his boyhood home near Lincoln Station to Spokane until the line was abandoned. As a hobby, Wilmer began collecting information about the interurban to help him to build models of the cars, which gradually developed into a complete history of the line.
The editor wrote a history of the street railway industry in Spokane as a Master's Thesis at Eastern Washington University in 1981.
The Inland Empire Railway Historical Society agreed to undertake the production of a single book containing this collected material. We hope you will enjoy it. Put some nickels in your pocket, sit back in your easy chair, and join us for a trolley ride through these pages.
