Inside Dust Jacket
Once, Kansas City's streetcar lines crisscrossed downtown, stretched all the way from there to the edge of town and even traveled beyond, to places like St. Joseph and Excelsior Springs, Leavenworth and Lawrence.
Across Kansas City, all over the region, you could take a splendid ride. If you lived here by the middle of the 20th century, you'll remember them. If you didn't, you'll be surprised how vast our streetcar network was.
Kansas Citians rode streetcars for more than eight decades. They began with little cars pulled by horses and mules, rolling on tracks that were the only smooth thing on the city's bumpy, unpaved streets. That was in 1870. By the end of the next decade, Kansas City had the :country's third-biggest web of cable-car routes. When electricity arrived to power streetcars, Kansas City hopped aboard and the lines stretched out far and wide.
Richly documented and vividly illustrated with photographs and maps, A Splendid Ride: The Streetcars of Kansas City, takes you on those rides through town and on a ride through time. You'll read about the coming and going of Kansas City's streetcars, the sentimental story as well as the practical one. You'll find out how we gained such a
marvelous network of rails and how we lost it.
