The Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad, the final remnant of the nation's electric interurban railroads, is held dear to many a commuter and railfan's heart. This smallish 88-mile line, which runs from the Indiana outpost of South Bend, through the northern Indiana industrial complex to Chicago's bustling Loop, is not only a transportation company, but also a viable, working monument, if you will, of the essence of electric railroading in this country. No where else in this land has this type of railroading remained alive. No where else has electric interurban railroading been able to survive, much less make a profit such as does this line.
To a great extent, the region through which it runs is responsible for its survival. Residential and commercial areas, rural landscapes and huge industrial steelmaking plants all blend to keep the South Shore a working railroad. The thousands of people who commute to Chicago's Loop, and the freight traffic the South Shore is able to generate with its on-line industries, combine to add revenues to the line's coffers.
Too, the railroad's management, and the help and support of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, are significant factors in the stability and growth of the South Shore.
Now under a new corporate banner, that of the Venango River Corp., the railroad appears to be headed for even more successes in the future.
