OF ALL our great mechanical creations, none has found its way into the hearts of men as inextricably as the steam engine. And in the hierarchy of such machines, the mighty steam railway locomotive is surely king. Who among us old enough to have attended upon the last glorious days of the age of steam has not stopped, mesmerised at the passage of this monarch of the rails? The spirit of steam was all pervading, and even in retirement stubbornly clings to its special place in life.
In this book 118 superb photographs of steam in New Zealand by master of the camera Roy Sinclair, and a lilting introductory prose by Gordon Troup, evoke the continuing vitalityof their subject. Here we see the silent leviathan awake and swell into life, grasp its incredibly heavy load and, straining at first, move out for its distant goal. We see 'double headers' thundering up steep mountain passes, tiptoeing across high bridges, and pounding through the ever-changing New Zealand landscape. We see giants, and gnomes; proud engines in their prime, and some of the more than 100 locomotives now held throughout the country awaiting a magic day when they may be called forth once more.
The Spirit of Steam is a book for all who thrill to the sight of white steam pulsing into a blue sky, to thrashing rods, thrusting pistons and the churning of big drivers on a shining ribbon of steel. It is equally for those who recall with lasting devotion the days of the steam engine's pre-eminence, and those newly caught by the fever.
The book has a practical side, too, for that large and hardy band of committed model railway enthusiasts will find here a rich treasure trove of information and ideas to exploit in the construction and operation of their own scale-size systems.
Through these pages the reader will come to understand something of man's love affair with steam, and if not already a lover, perhaps unashamedly become one.
