DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
For many people the Spokane, Portland and Seattle  is truly "The Northwest's Own Railway." Long enough to be a mainline, yet small enough to be a regional symbol. The Spokane, Portland & Seattle spanned the heart of the Pacific Northwest, binding western and central Oregon with eastern Washington and the Inland Empire. That its corporate identity sprang from the giant Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railways has in no way detracted from the SP&S's unique place in Northwest rail history.
Just as the Spokane, Portland & Seattle system was created by the amalgamation of numerous smaller companies, it became part of an even larger system....The Burlington Northern. So for those who see a railroad merely as locomotives and paint schemes, it can be argued that the SP&S is gone. However, so long as places traveled by the road still exist, the spirit of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle will exist. It can be felt today along an abandoned grade in the high plateaus of eastern Washington or in the passing of a BN double stack train along the route of "The Northwest's Own Railway."
This book traces the development and operation of each segment of the Spokane, Portland Seattle system. Special care has been taken to document the exact route of each line. Also interjected throughout is the human side of railroading through anecdotes from employees "who were there."
As in the authors previous books maps play an important role and will help the reader understand the various SP&S lines. They range from John Signor's outstanding "bird's eye view" maps to the individual "route maps" drawn by co-author Ed Austin using USGS topographic maps as the base reference. The data on these route maps represents accurate and scale locations of all Spokane, Portland & Seattle trackage with respect to their topographic features. The third type of map appearing throughout are station diagrams. These show track arrangements at specific times, and in each case were drawn from original railroad data, accurate for the date represented.
All in all, SP&S, The Spokane,Portland & Seattle Railway covers a lot of ground and will surely please the most discerning railfan and modeler. There is extensive photo coverage of all SP&S eras, from the beginning down to the present BN giant. This includes over 60 pages in color featuring the various SP&S diesel color schemes as well as several rare steam views.
