INTRODUCTION
The Southern Railway Company began operations on July 1, 1894 as the reorganization and consolidation of the properties of the Richmond & Danville RR System, widely advertised as the Piedmont Air Line, and the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia Ry, known as the Kennesaw Route. These companies had been built up into major railroad systems of the South under the control of Thomas Clyde and his son, William P. Clyde, both steamship operators of Philadelphia, through a holding company known as the Richmond & West Point Terminal Ry & Warehouse Co. The Clyde Steamship Company with its predecessors, although a separate enterprise, was closely related to the railroad and operated one of the largest fleets of coastal steamers on the Atlantic seaboard. These ships plied between principal ports from Boston to Jacksonville. The Clyde rail empire, embracing the R&D RR and the ETV&G Ry systems touched Atlantic coastal waters at West Point, Va., and Brunswick, Ga., and the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile. Connecting rail lines reached Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington and Norfolk and for a time provided a profitable rail-water route between Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and the land of Dixie.
