Introduction
During the late 1890's, our country suffered during an economic depression which affected all parts of society and businesses.
The railroads were so adversely hurt by those hard economic times that many went bankrupt as a result of the loss of business. Southern railroads were especially hard hit since many had not completely recovered from the effects of the War Between the States (1861-1865).
Even though the railroads were suffering from the economic disaster, many bankers and investors in general knew that railroads were still a wise investment. And with the hard times, they could make some of their purchases at rock bottom prices.
The House of (J. P.) Morgan, one of the largest banking interests in New York City, decided to take advantage of these negative circumstances. They were interested in two of the larger Southern roads: the Richmond & Danville and the East Tennessee & Georgia railroads. On July 1, 1894, the two roads were combined into one company known as the Southern Railway System. One of Morgan's most successful "trouble shooters" and respected businessmen, Samuel Spencer, became the first president of the new railroad (and remained so until 1906). Under his leadership, the Southern prospered and began a rapid expansion program which added dozens of other roads to the Southern family. Indeed, by the time of the Southern and Norfolk & Western's merger on June 1, 1982 - which created the current Norfolk Southern Corp. - the Southern consisted of 10,200 miles of railroad.
