Southern Railway was organized in 1894 by J. P. Morgan's New York banking firm on the financial ruins of the bankrupt Richmond & Danville system.. Morgan put his railroad specialist, native southerner Samuel Spencer, in charge as Southern's first president.
The Southern grew and prospered, never suffering bankruptcy or reorganization. The Southern Railway System (including subsidiaries) reached 10,427 miles by 1967, stretching from Washington to New Orleans and from Jacksonville to St. Louis and Cincinnati.
In 1982, Southern merged with Norfolk and Western to form Norfolk Southern.
Southern completed dieselization in 1953, years before most major railroads. Most of the engines pictured in this book are in Southern's "tuxedo" scheme of black and imitation aluminum (a light metallic gray that was white in appearance and commonly referred to a such) separated by a gold stripe. Southern was also about the last road to continue to order road switchers with high short hoods.
