Southern Pacific's Scenic Coast Line is perhaps the most familiar route of that extensive transportation system, to rail enthusiasts and the general public alike. With its terminals in California's two largest metropolises, the Coast Line closely follows the route of the early Spanish explorers and padres who established missions along "El Camino Real", translated as "The Kings Highway". Although a portion of the original route was California's first projected rail line, the railroad linking San Francisco with Los Angeles via San Jose, Watsonville, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara, was not completed until March 1901, rather late in California's railroad building boom.
The first railroad envisioned along what would later become a part of the Coast Line was the route surveyed by Lt. John Parke, south from San Jose in 1854. The first railroad to actually begin construction was the San Francisco & San Jose Railroad. The SF&SJ was incorporated in 1860 and had completed a line between its two namesake cities by June 6, 1864. This railroad would in short time become the building block for the future Southern Pacific, a line initially envisioned to link San Francisco and the San Joaquin Valley. Seeing the potential for unwelcome competition, The Big Four, of Central Pacific fame, quickly purchased the upstart Southern Pacific Railroad Company in 1868.
