Among American railroads, the Southern Pacific has been one of the most-chronicled as well as one of the most-photographed. The grand sweep of geography encompassed by its operations-from Oregon to Louisiana and Illinois-included many examples of superlative natural beauty combined with fascinating operations. From the beginning, the railroad held the cachet of being a pioneer in the development of the West. In its time, the Southern Pacific fielded a magnificent and varied fleet of passenger equipment, used on trains that frequently showcased some of the best scenery the West had to offer. Locomotives and freight equipment were distinctive and often innovative, and the architecture of stations and other structures was frequently impressive. Although many of these attributes had faded into the past by the time of the era portrayed in the book, much remained. Much remains to this day under the banner of Union Pacific, but that is beyond the scope of this volume.
For a railfan growing up (or spending any number of years) in northern California, it would be easy to view the Southern Pacific as THE railroad. It had its beginnings there, and faced many of its greatest geographical obstacles there as well. At one time, SP trackage blanketed the region; the general offices were located in San Francisco, and the primary locomotive shop was found in Sacramento, the state capital. The other Class I railroads in northern California could be seen as interlopers and latecomers (or perhaps as a nice change of pace when out rail-fanning), but limited in scope or significance. Even during its last two decades of independence, the Southern Pacific was the dominant rail operator in the northern part of the state.
