This book is an album of photos of the steam-powered 0-6-0's, 0-8-0's, and shop switchers that operated on the Pacific Lines of the Southern Pacific- those lines west of and including El Paso, Texas. Regrettably, switchers from the Southern Pacific's holdings east of El Paso (the Atlantic Lines) and the SP Mexican Lines could not be included because a sufficient quantity of photos was not available.
The Southern Pacific's steam switchers were real work horses, shuttling cars about railroad yards, switching cars on and off of industrial sidings, and making up the great limiteds that polished the rails of the mighty Southern Pacific. Most of these hard-working and indispensable steam switchers were never seen by the public. Only a few were assigned to passenger terminals where, resplendent in green paint and polished chrome cylinder covers, they fussed about, switching big name passenger trains like the COAST DAYLIGHT or the CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO.
