DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Travel the Golden Empire through the cameras of John B. Hungerford and Harold F. Stewart in more than 500 mostly never-beforepublished photographs in color. Mr. Hungerford, an author and printing company owner, traveled California from one end to the other focusing on the action of the Southern Pacific Railroad as well as shortline railroads of the west during the transition period when the steam locomotive was working side-by-side with the new diesel locomotives. Harold Stewart, a Motorman with the Pacific Electric and later a Locomotive Engineer with the Southern Pacific, traveled throughout the west photographing the SP and other railroad companies. You'll see first hand the photographs as observed through the extraordinary cameras of Misters Hungerford and Stewart.
