Our cover photo this year is from the camera of John Kirchner, illustrating #4449 at Tehama, California, on its way to Sacramento with a National Railway Historical Society special in April of 1981. Moments before, the SDP45 helper had been sent on ahead; the photographer arranged with fireman Wheelihan for this triumphant black plume.
The back cover illustrates three test paint schemes, a generation apart. At the top is Espee's latest, decorating upgraded SD45 #7399 (which has a 3000 horsepower V16 engine) upon rollout in Sacramento in November of 1981, in a photo by Brian Thompson. It may become the prototype for new colors for the entire fleet of SP diesels, but durability will be tested on this unit alone for a year before a final decision is reached. In contrast, the view of #6371 at Taylor Roundhouse in Los Angeles was taken by John Shaw in 1958, showing the ultraconservative "halloween" colors applied to a few engines of almost every type during an economy drive. Below that is vivid proof that the final masking for grey and scarlet was used on a few cab units with black and orange paint instead-as photographed (again by John Shaw) at Colton on January 4, 1959.
Our title page is the work of Joe McMillan, who stalked Locotrol-equipped SD40T-2's in the desolate canyons of Arizona in February of 1976, when radio-controlled remote helpers were still new. And the picture above is from Sacramento freelancer Shirley Burman, who has captured on film the first image of SD45E #7401-rolled out of Sacramento Shops on September 9, 1981-alongside 0-6-0 #1269, which emerged from those same works on June 20, 1921.
The artwork that enlivens cover and title pages is once again the product of the talented hand of Jack Neville.
Of course, there wouldn't be a Review without the continued financial support of the Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, which underwrites this project. Chairman Fred Stindt has now stepped up to Presidency of the national R&LHS, but both he and Vice Chairman Brian Thompson has been vitally involved in development of this book . . . Fred to the point of contributing a selection of his diesel photography. Once again, we appreciate the continuing support of the Board of Directors and the Chapter.
