For Californians, 1969 is a most significant year.
It marks centennial anniversaries of two major events: the start of Spanish colonization in 1769 - and the Golden Spike Ceremony that signalled completion of the first transcontinental railroad (now Southern Pacific) on May 10, 1869.
The Spanish era really started when Gaspde Portola led an overland expedition up the Calicoast, culminating in the discovery of San Francisco Bay. A year later, a presidio - or milibase - and Mission San Carlos were founded at Monterey. They were the forerunners of four military presidios and a jewel-like chain of 21 missions that were established largely along the coast.
After the turn of the 19th Century, California remained Spanish, although a few "Americanos" came west to live peacefully with the Mexican and the native Indian populations.
In 1839, a Swiss immigrant - John Augustus Sutter - established the "Kingdom of New Hel" in the Sacramento River Valley and within two years American settlers began arriving over. They virtually took over the area, expelling the Mexican governor in 1845 and establishing the Republic of California, headquartered in Sonoma under the leadership of John C. Fremont in 1846. The following year, the United States claimed California and under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the territory was officially ceded by Mexico.
