Here is an all-color pictorial of a railroad about which no one is neutral: the Southern Pacific. For those who love this proud, arrogant company, Southern Pacific: Oregon Division presents a retrospective on railroading in Oregon and northern California from the mid-1960s until the early 1990s. These were years of transition, and unfortunately, decline of the SP's influence in the Beaver State; however, the photographs and extended captions presented here emphasize the railroad in its former, healthy condition.
With 192 photographs by 38 photographers, Southern Pacific: Oregon Division presents a thorough look at SP's mainline and branchline operations in Oregon, from the first rails laid south out of Portland in 1868 to the eve of the proposed Union Pacific merger. The Willamette Valley, the Cascades, the Siskiyous, the Coastal Branches, the Modoc ... all are covered in these pages. The photographs presented here were selected to illustrate the dramatic geographic and geologic conditions through which the Southern Pacific's various Oregon Division lines were built; this is rugged mountain railroading of the first order.
This pictorial is intended as the first in a series of all-color volumes covering Southern Pacific's various operating divisions. Southern Pacific: Sacramento Division is in preparation and others will follow. It is hoped that, taken together, these volumes will provide a definitive look at what was once the most significant railroad in the American West.
