DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
From evergreen forests to the fertile valleys to the Pacific Ocean. This is Southern Pacific's "I-5 Corridor" route running north to south from Oregon to California.
In SP in the West- Part 2, you will travel this same journey, beginning with a last look at the original mainline to Portland, Oregon, via Medford and Roseburg, the Siskiyou Line. In 1995, the SP sold it to Rail-Tex, who runs it under the name of "Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad".
From the oldest to the newest mainline, the Natron Cutoff slices across the heart of the Oregon Cascade Mountains. Trains zigzag their way down the side of Pengre Pass to the Willamette valley, passing through numerous snowsheds and tunnels.
The Modoc Line out of Klamath Falls is the SP's most remote and sparsely run sector in California, built on the roadbed of the narrow gauge Nevada, California, Oregon.
Trains traveling over the Shasta Route remain within view of Mt. Shasta for almost one hundred miles before winding along the Sacramento River into the great Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.
The Coast Route is a line to behold, with trains climbing the rugged coastal hills, streaking across miles of fertile valleys and following 113 miles of the Pacific Ocean.
The landmark of the SP's I-5 Corridor is the rough, tough Tehachapi Mountains. The grade is steep and the SP shares it with the Santa Fe Railroad, making it a congested mountain railroad. The crown jewel of the line and mecca for thousand of railroad watchers and photographers is the Tehachapi Loop near the summit.
SP in the West-Part 2 ends with a look at the relationship of the California Sugar Beet industry and Southern Pacific.
All of this is reproduced beautifully in black and white within the pages of... SP in the West- Part 2
