Our Southern Pacific journey starts in Texas on the T&NO, moves acres to Houston and El Paso, before entering the states of New Mexico and Arizona. Continuing westward from the California line to Los Angeles, this all-color "Espee" trip turns northward to San Francisco and Oakland before ending on the Mountain Sub-Division. Side trips venture over the Monterey, Owenyo, and Keeler (the famous SP narrow gauge) branches. With a 1945 to mid-Sixties time frame, the steam power ranges from Cab Forwards to Moguls to Daylights. First generation diesel power includes Alco PAs, EMD cab units, FM Train Masters and Baldwin roadswitchers, nearly all in their as-delivered color schemes. A few vintage freight and passenger cars fill out our all-color coverage of the SP here in SOUTHERN PACIFIC In Color.
Author Dave Sweetland started his employment with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1959 after graduation from the University of Maine. At about the same time, his cousin Ross began working for the SP forming Dave's connection with the western carrier. Carrying his 35mm camera, Dave visited the SP in 1957 and again in the early 1960's which helped him get to know the road and build a photographic foundation for this book created some thirty years later.
