DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Southern Pacific, one of the West's largest and most historic railroads, operated a major fleet of freight cars. This is the first volume in a planned series on the history of these freight cars. It covers gondolas and stock cars, and the era is approximately 1900-1960, though with some coverage before and after those years.
The book contains an extensive array of rosters, photographs and, where possible, drawings of the major car classes, along with other material as available, such as construction photos, publicity photos, lettering diagrams, and so forth. Survival of the cars over the years is also described, and portrayed with in-service photos at various points in the life of car classes.
The book opens with an introductory section of background information, then covers work or ballast gondolas, the early "standard" cars, the General Service or GS cars of the 1920s as well as the GS cars after 1940, the solid-bottom gondolas of various periods, and the ore cars. A separate chapter describes the application and use of gondola side extensions.
Stock cars, from the CS-11 cars of the 1890s, through the standard Harriman cars, to the various late conversions of other cars to stock cars, are also given a full treatment in three chapters. A bibliography and index round out the book.
Researched through surviving Southern Pacific records and other sources preserved in museums, the book is truly comprehensive. Complete roster information, including car specialties such as trucks and hand brakes, is presented. The book's 537 photos, most from company and museum archives and never before published, together with 30 drawings, extensive rosters, and full bibliography, make it unusually complete and authoritative.
Though often neglected, freight cars form an essential part of the history of any railroad. This book provides a coverage that every railroad enthusiast, and of course Southern Pacific fans in particular, will enjoy.
