Jesse Villanueva, grinder operator at the Rail Welding Plant at Tracy, grinds to a smooth finish one of the 40 welds it takes to make a 1,440-foot "stalk" of ribbon rail. Fresh air is pumped into his protective "space helmet" while he works. See page 7 for a story on how short lengths of rail are bonded together.
