Originally established to haul iron ore from mines of the Marquette Iron Range to Lake\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eSuperior docks, its main line extended from a ferry connection to Michigan's lower peninsula at St. Ignace to Houghton in the Keweenaw copper country, whose business primarily gravitated to the road's Marquette headquarters. At Nestoria the western division branched off and crossed the UP and northern Wisconsin to Duluth, somehow missing the only sizeable population centers of Ironwood, Michigan, and Ashland, Wisconsin. The road's entire length traversed the Lake Superior snow belt, where snowfalls are measured in feet rather than inches, in rugged and inhospitable country that is still some of the most remote east of the Mississippi. Passenger service was primarily local, but included flagship trains Nos. 1 and 2, Lake Superior Limited, between St. Ignace and Houghton. Primary power was American Standard 4-4-0's, until a small fleet of Pacifics replaced them in 1913.
