Preface
The Gary & Southern Traction Company was one of the shortest interurban railways, formed in 1908, opened in 1912, shut down in 1933, with tracks continuing in service in Gary until 1947. It never really earned much money and suffered years of failure. Oddly enough, it was not even built like most such lines, being promoted as an electric feeder railroad for a longer steam railroad which never reached its destination(This was the Outer Belt Line). The history of the Gary & Southern thus is one of early hopes, and constant frustration leading to final failure. It is also the story of a small group of men who persevered in their efforts to connect Gary and Crown Point, and at least achieved a minor victory.
