Beginning with the notes and pictures collected by the late David Joslyn ( these mostly concerned the Central Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads) Gerald Best enlarged upon this material by diligent research and by the cooperation of the railfans and photographers who also gathered information on snowplows.
Pictures, diagrams and builders' designs of the Bucker, Rotary and Jull snowplows clearly demonstrate their operations, drawbacks and advantages. The development of this equipment is traced, and maps and rosters augment its story.
A chapter devoted to snowsheds is vastly interesting, for not only are the pictures spectacular, but the various types of construction, the problems of fire and snowslides are also delineated.
