Smoke Blows West By Helen Clark Fernald Novel Hard Cover 1937 288 Pages
A story about the railroad coming to Kansas0-Indian Territory line, the race of two ines for the concession, the politics and crooked dealings of the conflict. All this forms the background of a youth seeking his fortune in the west after the tragic death of his father and of the parta he played in ferreting out the dirty work behind the scenes.
To my father: This book was to have been his, for he was more truly its author than I. His diaries and manuscripts, filled with the records of his youthful years in southern Kansas, seemed to me living pages from the history of a period which ought to be remembered. They should have been published as he wrote them, but he would not have it so ; he wanted them made into a story. Here it is, then, his fact and my fiction-the story of a west where he built towns which have grown into cities, a west whose prairie country was my birthplace.
