A pictorial study of steam power on short lines and uncommon carriers of the "Bible Belt" in the glory years, from just prior to WWII, until abandonment or Dieselization overtook them.
The "Bible Belt" is generally accepted as covering a sweeping, wide arc of the southeastern United States, extending from West (By Damn) Virginia to the piney woods of East (By God) Texas. It was in this territory that small steam powered lines lasted so long and so well. Some of the locomotives sported giant wood burning balloon stacks and archaic link and pin couplers to the very end of operations.
This volume, the second of two, concentrates on the deepest of the Deep South's "Bible Belt." It covers the small steam powered lines of Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Eastern Texas.
These lines were unique, individual, self-reliant and self-sustaining. They had to contend with the Bowl Weevil that destroyed the cotton crop, the Great Depression that destroyed the spirit, paved highways that took away their freight and the Model T Ford that stole the few remaining passengers. Yet, these lines struggled along, through the 1940s War Years.
Many of these lines served a single industry, mine, quarry, cotton mill, town or sawmill. When the local industry failed, or the lumber and coal played-out, these carriers simply "up and quit!" A few survivors opted for new 44 and 70 ton Diesels that were sold by visiting salesmen... but most were abandoned in favor of highway transportation... or no transportation at all.
Generally colloquial, remote, archaic and old, the railway's names themselves are enough to excite the imagination. Roads like the Live Oak, Perry & Gulf; Wadley Southern; Waco, Beaumont, Trinity & Sabine and Sumpter & Choctaw were enough to affirm Edna St. Vincent Millay's words "Yet there isn't a train I wouldn't take."
So, pack a sandwich in a brown paper bag and climb aboard for a ride over these wonderful little lines that generally respected the Sabbath and ran on an irregular schedule "Daily `Cept Sunday."
