The granite industry of Barre has prospered to the extent that Barre once became known as the "granite center of the world". Yet, there was a time in the late 1800's when the granite industry almost died because of the excessive cost to transport the granite off of the Hill.
In SKY ROUTE TO THE QUARRIES, historian Bill Gove relates the story of the enterprise that saved the granite from an early demise, the Barre Railroad, later known as the Barre and Chelsea Railroad. Hauling the massive blocks of granite down the steep five percent grade required special skills and equipment, but the Barre Railroad provided an admirable service to Barre's principle industry until the advent of heavy duty trucking. The City of Barre thus prospered and grew to be one of the state's largest communities.
SKY ROUTE TO THE QUARRIES is the result of many years of part-time research and is abundantly illustrated with more that 100 vintage photographs plus maps detailing the fascinating tale of the Barre Railroad.
