In the years prior to the advent of modern communication systems, before radio and television, before electronic recording on disc and tape, our heritage was preserved and the great events experienced through other means.
Much of this past was preserved in the diaries kept by explorers and adventurers, then by pioneers and settlers, finally by recreational travelers and others who visited far away places. Other parts of our history were recorded by writers who had been hired by newspapers and magazines to travel to locations where important events were taking place so that they could report about them for others who could not see them. Churches sent missionaries around the world to teach, convert and report home about what they had seen and learned. Many who sojourned in far away places wrote to their families and friends with tales of their experiences. All of these documents, when available, tell us much about our past.
"Old Timers" who had lived their lives in remote areas, and strange environments (like those of the Colorado gold rush) were interviewed about their experiences, and their stories preserved. H.H. Bancroft wrote many history books which used this material.
Representational paintings by talented artists of the people, scenes and events which comprise history were in great demand. Others made sketches to record events, and these renderings were used to amplify the writing in periodicals.
The information and insight in these documents are valuable, but few would argue with the statement that the truest and most reliable rendering of the details of a scene are found in unretouched photographs. Photography came of age as the exploration and settlement of Colorado developed, and in the early photographs of Colorado there is much to see.
People often quote the Chinese philosopher Confucious, who said in reference to painting, "One picture is worth a thousand words." Living between 371 and 288 BC, he could not have known about photography. Had he, he might have thought it possible for a photographic image to be worth even more.
Scientists in the early 1800s observed that silver salts were, in some mysterious manner, sensitive to light. This observation would later lead to the discovery of photography. Many books have been written on the topic which
