I began as most do, by photographing to show what things are like; only soon the phrase was, what things had been like: change was making my photographs historical. This was long before I grasped the term \"documentary,\" and longer before I heard a renowned photographer say that photography was art all right-but, remember, applied art. Photography as art is often documentation, and photography as documentation may also be art.
