DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
The Reagan Administration promised the nation a 600-ship Navy before the end of 1990, and there is now every indication that the promise will be made good. There is no doubt that this has been a mighty achievement, an astonishing recovery from that nadir of the mid-1970s when the Navy had only about 450 undermanned and underequipped ships in its inventory. But some important questions still remain. For example, given the fulminating power of the Soviet Navy, will 600 ships really be enough? In any case, are they the right kind of ships, and do they carry the right kind of weapons? How soon will they become obsolete and have to be replaced-and by what and at what cost?
SHIPS OF THE US NAVY is a book meant to help the layman answer such questions. It not only describes, illustrates and evaluates all the major classes of combat and support ships now in the fleet, but also their weaponry (including aircraft), the tactics and strategies that govern their deployment, the nature of the opposition they would have to face in war and much else. Its assessments of the Navy's current strengths and weaknesses are candid, and its speculations about future problems and requirements are thought-provoking. In short, this is far more than just a handbook of the ships in the American fleet: In a real sense it is a guide to the contemporary Navy itself.
