Here's the story of a fascinating rail-marine operation which blanketed the West Coast from Alaska to San Diego. It entails narrow gauge, standard gauge and steamships and was an important factor in the growth of the West.
The book is wonderfully illustrated from the author's fantastic photograph collection, and meticulously researched.
You will enjoy reading of the development of a horse drawn railway at San Luis Obispo into a full fledged narrow gauge steam railroad which ran along the wharf to serve the steamships.
In 1882 another horse drawn railway was acquired, this one near the wharfs in San Diego. It was developed into a standard gauge line to connect with the railroads on shore.
The company's third rail operation was at Seattle, where it consolidated a group of railroads in that area to meet the transcontinental rails of the Union Pacific and to feed the Pacific Coast Company's steamships (78 of these flew the company's flag!).
This flourishing and profitable transportation empire reached its zenith in 1915 but today only a vestige of the once extensive route is in operation near Seattle - and this with leased motive power. It's a good story, one you'll enjoy.
