Settle Carlisle Celebration By David Joy Soft Cover 1990  56 pages
I HAD vowed never to write another word about the Settle - Carlisle line. During the 1980s this once neglected railway over the fells has been transformed into a national cause, attracting newspaper headlines at the merest whisper of any change or development. This has brought in its wake a plethora of books, reports, plans and documents - both leaked and unleaked - from a host of individuals, committees, trusts, quangos and so on. In truth, it seemed there was nothing more to say. There is also a lament for past glories: those of us who knew the old Settle -Carlisle, when dirty steam engines hauled freight over Ais Gill unfussed and unsung, have something of a death-wish for the line. As with those who decry the efforts to save Venice, there is a feeling that this "real" railway should have been left to perish in all its faded magnificence.
Yet such thinking is to ignore the unprecedented campaign against closure which lasted five long years before turning into triumph. This victory has now resulted in the line enjoying what is arguably its best-ever passenger service with six SuperSprinter trains each way daily. There are ambitious plans for development of wayside stations, repairs to viaducts and tunnels, a "heritage train" and a complete re-signalling scheme. Some 500,000 passengers per year are now carried compared with about 90,000 in 1983.
It was this fivefold increase that finally persuaded me to compile this modest offering. Books a-plenty there may have been in the last few years, but increasingly they have concentrated on specific aspects of the line. What it seemed was lacking was a brief pictorial introduction - especially as many previous works are now out-of-print. This book is an attempt to meet such a need; it contains some of the best illustrations from my earlier works on the line, together with new drawings and photographs - including several in colour. It is both a reflection and a celebration that this unique railway has been saved.
