The Settle and Carlisle Route  Revisited By T G Flinders Dust Jacket 1985 Many black & white photos.   128 Pages
The Settle & Carlisle line is one of Britain's most remarkable railways, passing through breathtaking scenery and featuring magnificent engineering works. But the same circumstances which give it these qualities have also made it an enormous challenge to operate and maintain; a challenge which increases with the constant deterioration of the vital infrastructure of the line, for many years starved of capital investment.
A strong body of opinion holds that the line should never actually have been built and recent years have seen a determined run down of the route by British Rail, which obviously sees it as little more than an unwelcome liability. BR's determination to close the line, and the forceful opposition this has aroused have undoubtedly made it into Britain's most controversial railway route.
The withdrawal first of main line passenger services and then of through freight operations has reduced the Settle & Carlisle to a minimal level of existence. Despite the deliberate cutting of services in order to bolster the case for closure, the line has continued to prove its worth as a diversionary route for both the West and East Coast main lines. If it is indeed to close, the S&C has certainly enjoyed a glorious Indian Summer with the many main line steam specials operated over it since the return of steam on 25 March 1978.
Following his highly successful and acclaimed work On the Settle & Carlisle Route, Terry Flinders has assembled a stunning collection of photographs which do true justice to the grandeur of this unique line. These are accompanied by a text which is both informative and sensitive, and which shows the author to have a true feeling for this great railway.
