In all my experience of Lancashire industry, which is considerable, I have always found that people play a much greater part in the nature and methods of that industry than in other parts of Britain. This book, consequently, in dealing with two Lancashire companies which in the fullness of time became one, is just as much about Lancashire people as about Lancashire engineering.
To those vehicle 'purists' who absorb reams of technical matter in the minutest detail, my apologies for failing to provide much of such detail in this book. In fact each of the two companies, when they functioned as individual entities, produced numerous model variations, and obviously each and every type could not possibly be listed and illustrated in one short volume. On the other hand I have painted a broad picture of the background of the two companies, the kind of people who made them a commercial success - not forgetting the disasters and failures along the way - and the kind of vehicles they produced. In doing this I was aided immeasurably by employees and directors, past and present, of both Seddon and Atkinson. In particular I have to thank Tony Allen, Harry Redmond, Peter Yates, Stuart Eden-Smith, Geoffrey and David Redmond, and last, but by no means least, Frank Whalley, whose efforts over the years have managed to preserve many of the old records of both companies, without which the writing of Seddon Atkinson would not have been possible. To these good friends, and to many others who offered help and encouragement during the gradual construction of the narrative, I wish to say 'Ta, lads'. And I trust that the end result entertains and perhaps even educates the reader.
