SAL's lines also criss-crossed Florida serving Tampa, St. Petersburg and Tallahassee as well as lines in Georgia to Macon and Columbus. The operating \"Hub of the Seaboard\" was Hamlet, North Carolina. With five lines radiating out of Hamlet, it was the logical point for SAL's only hump classification yard and was a major shop facility. The Portsmouth and Roanoke began to lay rails toward the Roanoke River and Weldon, N.C. in 1833 and reached that point in 1836. Also part of the SAL was Florida's first rail line, the Tallahassee Railroad completed in 1836 from Tallahassee to Port Leon, Florida, a distance of 22 miles. This road, along with the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad, which began serving those North Carolina communities in 1840, would later become major parts of the SEABOARD. By 1860, Seaboard predecessors had built 325 miles of line in Florida, linking Jacksonville with the state capital in Tallahassee, the Atlantic port of Fernandina with the Gulf port of Cedar Key. The Raleigh and Gaston and the Portsmouth and Roanoke were joined to provide a through route from Portsmouth to the North Carolina capital. Also during these two decades, a 112 mile line from Wilmington to Rockingham, North Carolina was constructed by SAL predecessors. Shortly after the beginning of the century, this association took on the corporate identity of the Seaboard Air Line. Additional consolidations, acquisitions and mergers extended the Seaboard's trackage into Georgia, Florida and Alabama.
